Time for a tutor?

Published: 27th September 2008 12:41

There comes a time in every parent's life when they run out of time patience and energy at the sound of  "We don't do it like that in school " as their youngster flounces away clutching that last minute piece of homework. It is at this time your thoughts turn to handing the challenge over to a tutor., but whether you turn to the internet or telephone directory what should you consider.....

Kip McGrath - Give Your Child A Chance To ShineGive your child a chance to shine

How to find a tutor
 -
talk to other parents, see if they have used a tutor, who do they recommend
- talk to your child's teacher, they may know of a reputable tutor
- do a bit of research on local area websites especially those that incorporate comments
- use the internet, telephone directory to make initial enquiries

Kip McGrath - Give Your Child A Chance To ShineYour child can stand out from the rest!

Home tuition versus Tuition Centre

Consider these factors

  • can you clear a quiet space for your child to work in at home ?
  • do you have the resources close at hand ?
  • will there be interference from siblings?
  • does the centre have the correct public liability insurances,CRB checks, health and safety and fire procedures in place ?
  • does the tuition centre have a well defined space for each pupil to work in?
  • do the pupils enjoy going there?

Individual or group tuition

  • are the group numbers small enough for each child to receive adequate instruction and attention
  • if taught individually will the pupil develop too much dependency on the tutor?
  • If in a large group setting are the pupils actually taught or just given work to complete, which is then marked by the teacher

Teaching methods

  • are the lessons based on National Curriculum content?
  • are the lessons pitched at the child's specific level?
  • are the pupils continually assessed, and are parents informed of their progress?
  • are lessons taught by qualified teachers who are familiar with the current curriculum ?
  • are teaching methods adapted to suit the needs of each pupil ?
  • does the centre use interactive resources to make the teaching more exciting for each pupil ?

Once you have considered all of this then you are equipped to make your decision.
