Council To Consult On Maintenance Scheme To Improve Saturday Market

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is to consult with businesses and other key stakeholders in Beverley over plans for a maintenance scheme to improve the town's Saturday Market.

Successive harsh winters have left paving stones and cobbled areas damaged and the carriageway surface in a poor condition, leaving the iconic area in contrast to Toll Gavel and North Bar Within.

The council is keen to work closely with traders and the market organisers on the plans to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum and that businesses remain open during the period of works.

The scheme will be delivered using a portion of the savings from the budget under-spend, achieved by the council in the financial year 2012/13, allocated for road maintenance.

As well as traders and residents, the council will also consult with statutory undertakers so that any improvement works planned for the near future can be included to keep the potential for disruption to a minimum.

Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "The East Riding has born the brunt of much of the severe weather over the last few years and it has been clear that improvement works to Saturday Market were required.

"Saturday Market is the most heavily used pedestrian area in the East Riding and due to the high traffic volumes and increased footfall from residents and visitors, the council has decided to continue on from the maintenance works in Toll Gavel and North Bar Within in order to improve the appearance of Saturday Market.

"The council is in an enviable position in being able to carry out a maintenance scheme of this nature which will bring long-term benefits to the area and provide a timely boost for both the local economy and safeguard jobs in the construction industry.

"The council is keen to receive feedback on the proposed plans so as to put together the best possible scheme of works."
