Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child last year delivered over 1.2 million shoeboxes full of Christmas cheer to children in The Ukraine, Romania, Belarus, Serbia, Kyrgyzstan, Bosnia, Kosova, Swaziland, Liberia, Montenegro, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Mozambique.

All of these boxes were filled and donated by the public, either through individual donations or by schools, churches or workplaces organising group collections.

Samaritan's Purse, the charity that runs the scheme, is asking for donations again this year so that they can make Christmas a little happier for under-privileged children once more.

Filling and wrapping a shoebox sounds easy, but there are one or two things you have to take into consideration. For example, toy guns are an understandable no-no, but so is chocolate, which you might not expect. Because the boxes have to comply with local regulations and sensibilities, there is a list of ideas and what to avoid on the website - click this link.

Boxes can be made up for either a boy or a girl, with age ranges 2-4 years, 5-9 years and 10-14 years. This means the recipient can get content relevant to them. Note the request that your box mixes fun and educational content and be sure to leave it so that the lid can be opened and contents checked for suitability and compliance with customs and import regulations.

Once you have filled your box (or boxes!), you can drop it off at a local collection point. You can find your nearest one here.

So, why not add a few items to your Christmas shop this year - and maybe organise a collection at your workplace or church. Every box gives an extra child a better Christmas.
