Smoking and Nicotine Addiction
| Published: 6th April 2008 20:24 |
If you smoke and come for an Easy Smoking Cessation session, in part of the first half of the session you will discover that you have been ‘conned' into believing that smoking is an addiction and if you believe that you are addicted then obviously it will make it seem that more difficult to quit! In this article I hope to convince you that there is no such thing as nicotine addiction.
Cigarette smoking has to be the biggest marketing and advertising success of the last century. It was initially ‘sold' to people on the grounds that it was good for your throat! Then it was glamourised by having all the Hollywood stars of the time posing with cigarettes and coolly blowing smoke with a languorous look about them thus associating smoking with a particular lifestyle and being laid back and relaxed. Maybe like me you've noticed that, now that there is a ban on advertising cigarettes and there is the public smoking ban, there has been a recent increase of actors and actresses once again being seen smoking on the TV and in films and this is almost always when they are stressed and need to relax thus associating smoking with a certain lifestyle and relaxation again.
Having smokers believe that they are addicted to cigarettes, more specifically addicted to the nicotine in them, pays massive dividends to the tobacco companies, the Government (in taxes) and the drug companies who make the nicotine replacements.
However, here is the GOOD NEWS...
Smoking cigarettes is just a habit and that's all it ever was, is, or could be.
Why smoking cigarettes is NOT an addiction...
Think about it, if you are truly addicted to something, over time you need to want more and more of what you're addicted to as you get used to the effects it has on you. Does that make sense? If smokers are addicted then how come they reach a ‘happy number of cigarettes' that they smoke a day? For example, some smoke 5 to 10 a day; others smoke 20 a day; and a few smoke 40 to 60 a day. BUT, when was the last time you met anyone who smoked 100 to 200 a day? The answer is NEVER and you never will.
So why is this...?
It's simple, if you smoke, your body regulates the amount of toxins it can handle in one day - it controls how many cigarettes you smoke, this is known as your ‘comfort factor.' And yes, now and again, you may find that your daily intake rises, usually during times of stress, but when that time passes you always go back to your usual daily intake. Can you see that if you were truly an ‘addict' you would need to smoke more and more to continue to gain any enjoyment from it...that's the true definition of addiction. Also, when was the last time you heard of anyone overdosing on cigarettes? The answer is...Never!
So, I hope that you can clearly see that smoking is just a habit, and habits can be changed very, very easily with the power of hypnosis, always assuming, that is, that you want to quit in the first place!
