Winter Safety Message from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Now that the weather is turning colder East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service would like to emphasise the importance of electric blanket fire safety. Electric blankets can be very dangerous if not used properly and this can be prevented with some easy to follow steps. If your electric blanket shows any of the following signs it should be checked or replaced: any fraying fabric, scorch marks, exposed elements, creasing, damp patches, if the tie tapes are damaged or missing, any worn flex, loose connections or if it has an old safety mark - this is a round symbol incorporating a "kitemark. All these indications could mean the electric blanket is over ten years old.Electric blankets should be replaced every ten years and if you have to buy a new one it is important to check that it has the British or European standard safety certification marks and an overheat protection facility. Electric blankets also need to be stored properly; they should be rolled but not folded to prevent damage to the electrical wires. To ensure electric blankets are used safely: · Always follow the instructions.· Never use an electric underblanket as an overblanket or vice versa.· Tie the electric blanket to the bed or mattress as this could prevent creasing.· Only leave an electric blanket switched on all night if it is safe for all night use and has a thermostatic control. Otherwise make sure it is switched off and disconnected before you get into bed.· Do not get blankets wet, if it is wet do not use it, and do not turn it on to dry it.Of fires caused by electric blankets 99% result from products that are over ten years old. For further information on electric blanket safety please contact Steve Wright on 01323 462449.
