Walk down Battle High Street and turn down into Abbey Court, between Barclays and the Butchers. There you will find Barberlou's. You may know it in its' previous incarnation as SHAFAK, which it has been for the past 20 years.
Having taken over from an existing hairdresser's in the middle of October the new owner, Louise, has some good long-term plans for the place.
As an established hairdresser's Louise is intending to maintain that service and hopes to encourage all existing female customers to continue using the service as well as attracting new clientele. Perhaps you went there when it was under the previous ownership and didn't feel it was right for you. GO BACK NOW! You will be sure of a big smile, happy demeanour and a warm welcome.
What are these plans that Louise has got for the shop?
Louise says, "When I brought Shafaks I didn't want to stop the ladies coming in just because I was going to do men's hair. Mayleigh has been at the shop for nearly three years and has quite a big following. Mayleigh is BARBERLOU's ladies stylist as well as having twenty years experience in Lithuania as a barber."
"First of the changes is to become known as a man's Barber. As we've said above, the female hairdressing will continue. But now you men will have the opportunity of getting a barber's cut whilst the ladies continue on the other side of the room. There's plenty of space so you won't be getting in each others way!"
"We will be known as a barber's shop that caters for ladies hair. After all, there are plenty of hairdresser's who do the occasional man's cut, so why not have it the other way round?"
Louise is also keen to point out the appointments system that she will operate. She said, "How many hairdressers do you have to make an appointment for if you're a man wanting a cut? Not at Barberlou's! For the men it is a no appointment system. Just like any barber shops. So, if you walk into your normal barber's and find the queue is too long for you, why not pop down to us and reduce your waiting time.
Ladies can also try their luck and may find there is no need to make an appointment either! However ladies, if you do prefer to make an appointment to be certain of your cut, then that facility will continue to be available."
Also ladies, if you are not sure of what you want, why not pop in for a consultation and a coffee.
Although the shop does need some modernising, Louise wants to get a feel for the place before making any drastic changes. She would like a modern feel without being ultra-modern. She says, "State of the art can be intimidating for some. It has to remain a relaxed friendly place where everyone will feel comfortable with the surroundings."
What is Louise's story?
Louise has been in the hair trade for fifteen years, spending the last five and a half years working in Battle in a local barbers (so you are likely to recognise the face if not the name), before taking the plunge and going it alone. She started out as a Saturday girl in a busy popular Eastbourne salon working up to being there full time and then going on to college. It was while at college that she got interested in to doing barbering. The trainees had to do a two week work experience and having worked in a ladies salon Louise wanted to see why men had their hair cut in a barbershop. After getting her hairdressing qualifications Louise worked in a hairdressers for a while, but was keen to be able to cut men's hair to a high precision finish that isn't normally available with ladies hairdressing. So off she went to re-train at barbering. The rest, as they say, is history.
Louise is very enthusiastic about the art of men's hair. "I love cutting men's hair, with the short precise styles and the sleek old fashion cuts as well as today's long and funky modern out of bed head look. Whatever you want I can cut it, even those American g.i flat tops. I also do a lot of young children's haircuts and try and make it fun and offer them a little gift and lollipop for being well behaved, or brave in some cases! It can sometimes be a daunting experience for little ones, especially if it is their first hair cut."
