Thanks to the actions of a member of the public who spotted and noted the registration number of a fly-tipper in Sedlescombe, Rother District Council was able to identify and prosecute the offender.
The incident of fly tipping at Hurst Lane, Sedlescombe took place on 20th September 2007 and was reported to Rother's Environmental Health Service. The waste consisted of a large pile of plasterboard. The registered keeper of the vehicle was traced and the offender, who was borrowing the vehicle, was subsequently identified and formally interviewed by Council Officers.
On the 2nd May 2008 Rother District Council successfully prosecuted a Hastings man, at Hastings Magistrates Court for the illegal deposition of controlled waste, an offence under section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. He was fined £350 with costs of £544 awarded to Rother District Council.
Councillor David Russell, a member of Rother District Council's Cabinet said, "The Council very much welcomes the support of residents in ensuring that those that spoil our beautiful countryside by this illegal act are brought to book. The Council spent £40,000 on dealing with illegal fly tipping last year and this cost unfortunately falls to be met by Rother Council Tax payers."
If you see fly-tipping from a vehicle please note down the registration number and telephone the Council's Environmental Health Division on 01424 787557 or use the Report a Fault facility on the Customer Service Section of the Council's web site at www.rother.gov.uk where you will be able to identify the exact position of the offence on an interactive map.
