Because she cannot bear him a son and heir, Henry VIII wishes to divorce Katherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn.
In this he is opposed by the Pope, Spain and his own Chancellor, Sir Thomas More, whose conscience will not allow him to comply. This very successful play from the 1960's shows how More uses every legal device to stay alive when any opposition to the King is swiftly suppressed.
