One of the important services of the Bexhill Caring Community is the Library Service for the Housebound. This is operated in conjunction with the Bexhill Library of the East Sussex County Council.
Books are taken by car to Nursing Homes, Homes for the Elderly and to individual addresses where the occupants are housebound or unable to get to and from the County Libraries. Each reader receives a visit every fortnight. The books are chosen by the helpers from a special stock of books in the Bexhill Library but others can be requested and will, if available, be provided by the County.
There are well over 300 readers who are split between 22 rounds on which one or two people help. Generally the round will be completed in about three hours. As people are visited regularly, their reading habits will be ascertained and the choice of books by the helpers will be made to meet these.
The County Council make a contribution of 40p per mile for the mileage done on this Service.
This is an interesting and worthwhile job. Owner drivers and non drivers to help in this work will find it a rewarding service.
