Volunteering Opportunities - January

Falls Prevention Volunteer - The risk of falling increases as we get older and the consequences become more serious, both for health and quality of life.  Age Concern Hastings is recruiting a team of volunteers who will visit people at risk of falling in order to check both the client and their home for factors likely to lead to a fall, and liaise with other agencies for corrective action.

They are seeking people who have, or are willing to acquire, knowledge of falls issues and local falls related services (training will be given).  You will need to be able to communicate effectively with older people and maintain the necessary records.  A CRB check will be undertaken.

In addition volunteer Translators/Facilitators are required.  This role demands fluency in another language in addition to having a good command of English.

Access to a computer and email is required for all roles.  They also an Administrator who is computer literate, organised, efficient and able to ‘think outside the box'. The roles will take place in various locations in Hastings and St. Leonards.

If you are you are passionate about housing and supporting people in housing need then Friends of Ashley Homes - a supported housing project for homeless families and single people based in Hastings and run by Sanctuary Housing Association is looking for two volunteers to join its Management Committee.

They are seeking a Chairperson to chair meetings, ensure legal procedures are met and that the meeting is quorate, and summarise what the outcomes are.  Also a Treasurer to set up and maintain a bookkeeping system, ensuring all receipts are given and logged.  Also to help with the funding and planning the financial needs of the group.  Both positions would entail becoming signatories for the bank account.

Please consider these positions, as the management of the project is key to its success.  Meetings are held monthly at 5.00 pm but this could be changed if necessary.  To find out more contact Maureen Curzon, Secretary, on 01424 465112/721489 or email maureen.curzon@sanctuary-homes.co.uk

The St. Raphael Club meets on Wednesdays to give disabled people a day out to meet with others, and their carers a chance to rest or go shopping etc.  The Club meets at the Holy Redeemer Church Hall - Upper Church Road - and  provides social activities and outings for their members.  They are in a position where they need volunteers to get involved both as helpers within the club and most urgently for drivers and escorts to assist with transport of elderly and disabled people from their home to the club.  Without this help the club may not be able to continue which would be much to the disappointment and detriment of its members.

If you would like to get involved with this worthwhile project, please call Audrey Dickenson on 01424 852664.

Do you like working with children and young people?  Do you want to make a positive difference to the life of a young person in care?  Do you have a few hours to spare every couple of weeks?  If so then you may be interested in becoming an Independent Visitor.  An Independent Visitor is someone who is training and supported to befriend a local child or young person in the care of social services, who has little or no contact with their birth family.

You both choose activities to do together and develop a supportive friendship where you offer them encouragement and emotional support, and help them to pursue their beliefs and interests.

The post will be subject to an enhanced CRB and child protection check.

If you are interested in finding out more or getting an application pack, please contact Kate Maxted,  Independent Visitor Co-ordinator, Xpress Advocacy Service on 01323 733111 or email kate.maxted@seap.org.uk
