HVA A Volunteer Is Not Just For Christmas

An open message from Rose Austen of Hastings Voluntary Action 28th Dec2007
At this time every year I get approaches from people who have been moved by the festive season to offer their time to help people more unfortunate than themselves - Surviving Christmas, held at the YMCA each year would not happen if people were not willing to give up (or defer) their celebrations on the day itself.
It is important however, to remember that Surviving Christmas itself depends upon a dedicated band of people who work throughout the year to fund raise for, and organise the event. Also the work required to set up before and clean up the YMCA after the event is often less attractive to potential volunteers, but equally important.
I hop that people are inspired by their(or others') Christmas volunteering exploits to think about continuing to help out throughout the year - after all there are lonely and isolated people needing friendship and support all year round.
If, after the surfeit of mince pies and Christmas cheer has worn off, you want to find out more about what volunteering opportunities are available all year round please contact me for a chat.
If you are interested in volunteering and want to find out more contact me at Volunteer Centre on 01424 446060/444010 or email: rose@hvauk.org.
You can also find voluntary opportunities by visiting www.do-it.org.uk or on HVA's own website www.hastingsvoluntaryaction.org/volunteering which you will initially find reproduced in this volunteering section of About My Area.
