HVA Volunteering News, With Rose Austen, Volunteer Centre Organiser

Published: 26th February 2008 14:33

Volunteer Centre Logo At this time of year when the days are getting longer and the temperature is rising, many people are inspired to get involved in raising funds for their favourite charity or cause by participating in outside sporting events like the Hastings Half Marathon (or even the London Marathon). These are high profile events that can raise huge amounts of money through sponsorship, and are great fun for the participants.

However you don't have to be super fit to participate in fundraising activities. Lots of charities are always looking for volunteers to get involved in events - some are sedentary like having your head shaved, while others a bit more active like bungee jumping and fire walking.

Local organisations such as St. Michael's Hospice and the Martha Trust* have full time fundraisers who will always welcome people wanting to help raise funds. They usually have plans in the offing for a programme of events over the coming year, so why not get in touch with them to find out how you and your mates can get involved. You may not want to volunteer on an ongoing basis but still want to do your bit. These one off events are your opportunity to contribute and have fun at the same time.

We at HVA will be doing our bit over the next few months - HVA's Director Steve Manwaring will be running in the Hastings Half Marathon on 16 March to raise money for Saxon Mount Youth Project, and one of our administrators, Sue Matthews, will be run/walking in the ‘Race for Life' in Alexandra Park in aid of Cancer Research UK on 15 June. I myself hope to be organising a ‘Cake Break' in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Society in April (which will definitely not involve running anywhere!).

If you want to find out more about forthcoming fundraising events for St. Michael's Hospice or the Martha Trust contact the following people:-
St. Michael's Hospice - Cheryl Davis on 01424 201838 cheryldavis@stmichaelshospice.com
Martha Trust - Julie Brett on 01424 757966 juliebrett@marthatrust.org.uk

To support Steve in the half marathon just email steve@hvauk.org who will gratefully receive any pledges however great or small, and to sponsor Sue log on to www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/suematthews
