Police in Cotswold and Stroud Division Issue Crime Prevention Advice to Revellers during the Festive Season

Published: 21st November 2007 12:14

Police in the Cotswold and Stroud are urging partygoers to behave responsibly and take greater care with personal items during the festive season.

The advice comes in the run up to Christmas when people tend to socialise more and often leave themselves vulnerable to crime.

Acting Sergeant Mark Godsland, Crime Prevention Officer for Cotswolds and Stroud, said: "I would urge the public to take a greater care with their personal items, when out an about at parties as we regularly receive call concerning theft of purses, mobile phones and wallets."

"Never leave valuables unattended on a table or your bag or coat on the back of a chair. If there is a cloakroom facility then use it."
He also advised revellers to think ahead and to steer clear of any trouble.
"Make sure that you stay with your party and that someone knows where you are at all times," he said.

"Consider how you are going to get home and never walk home alone. Try to pre-book a taxi or arrange a lift with a friend or family member and please remember not to drink and drive.

"Either have a designated driver who does not drink or arrange for a lift or taxi as potentially there is more to lose than a licence should people drink and drive," he added.

And he continued: "Steer clear of trouble - if you see any trouble or suspect that it might be about to start, alert the police and keep away.

"Walk with confidence and be wary of casual requests from strangers, like someone asking for a cigarette or change and avoid carrying your wallet in your back trouser pocket."
