Highways Agency Update For England's Motorways And Major A Roads

Published: 24th July 2007 00:24

The Highway Agency's traffic control centres continue to monitor traffic conditions and the weather closely.

There are no current closures on England's motorways but we are advising drivers to avoid the M5 between J8 - J11. The flood waters are still very high in the surrounding area and there is a continuing risk of flooding and any congestion in the area could hamper emergency relief efforts. Drivers are asked to find alternative routes wherever possible.

The A40 remains closed at Highnam, north of Gloucester through to the Elmbridge roundabout, East of Gloucester, to assist the emergency services with their rescue and flood defence operations in the area.

Drivers are also advised that emergency services are advising against any unnecessary journeys to Gloucester and Tewkesbury.

The Highways Agency advises drivers to check the forecast and their route for delays before they set off. Leave extra time for your journey, and keep listening to travel and weather bulletins.

For information on the weather, check forecasts on TV or radio broadcasts or visit the Met Office website.

For the latest information about flood waters affecting the motorways and major A roads in England, please visit the Highways Agency website or call our telephone information services after finding a safe place to call. For live traffic information call 08700 660 115 or 08457 504030 to speak to an operator. Listen to travel bulletins while you are driving.

We advise drivers to move slowly through any standing water and test their brakes once they're through before continuing to drive.
