County Poised for More Wet Weather
| Published: 4th September 2008 22:10 |
With wet weather forecast throughout the weekend, Gloucestershire County Council is on alert to deal with any problems that may arise.
Heavy rain is forecast to continue throughout today and then turning to showery weather through to 7am tomorrow and until Monday morning.
Teams from Gloucestershire Highways have been diverted from construction jobs and are working around the network clearing grips and gully tops to ensure the drainage system is working as freely as possible.
Extra gangs have been drafted in to cover through the night and the teams will be available tomorrow and during the weekend if needed.
Localised flooding has been reported in parts of the county and Highways teams are working to clear the water.
In Gloucester, Robinswood Primary School has taken the decision to close tomorrow following from the heavy rain today.
The rear playground and school playing field has collected a considerable amount of water and a decision was taken to close the school to pupils as a precaution.
Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service, part of Gloucestershire County Council Community Safety Directorate, is receiving calls from householders concerned about flooding.
But as they are extremely busy, residents are advised not to call unless there is an emergency, in which case they should ring 999.
Householders are advised to call the Environment Agency's Floodline on 0845 988 1188 or visit their website www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/www.environment-agency.gov.uk for advice.
Chris Rogan, Head of Gloucestershire Highways said: "According to weather reports, we have had two inches of rain last night and we are expected to get the same tonight and through Friday.
"This rain is forecast to continue until Monday, but we are not too alarmed.
"We've have got teams out across the county ensuring gullies are clear and that systems are working as well as possible.
"We also have extra teams available on stand-by and they can be called upon throughout the weekend.
"I understand people may be anxious and if anyone does have concerns about the roads they can call our helpline on 08000 514 514."
