Following last night's Crimewatch programme, detectives are following up a vital new lead in the search for the man who strangled and set fire to Eastleigh cabbie Derek Fletcher.
During the dramatic reconstruction of the horrific attack, which took place in Stoneham Lane, Eastleigh, on May 21st this year, officers received a text message which allegedly named the partner of a potential suspect.
Detective Inspector Stuart Murray is leading the enquiry, codenamed Operation Seymour. In a direct appeal to camera he appealed for the person who sent the text to get back in touch, saying "I would ask the sender of that text to re-contact the show (Crimewatch) or call us at Eastleigh Police Station. We do not know the circumstances in which the text was sent."
The attacker is a white male, about 5' 10" tall, thin & of gaunt appearance. On the night he attacked Mr Fletcher he was close-shaven and was wearing a dark-coloured hooded top.
Mr Fletcher has been treated at a specialist burns unit, and is now recovering at home. There is a reward for information leading to the arrest of the attacker.
Anyone with information should contact police on 0845 045 45 45 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111
