"Poor" Response to Crimewatch Cabbie Programme
| Published: 22nd August 2007 21:37 |
Detectives have admitted that the response to Monday's Crimewatch programme has been "poor."
The programme showed a graphic reconstruction of the events of May 21st, when Eastleigh taxi driver Derek Fletcher was brutally strangled and set on fire. Only two new leads have been produced, and officers are following up these new lines of enquiry.
Mr Fletcher will be unable, both physically and emotionally, to drive a taxi again.
Perry McMillan, chairman of the Southampton and Eastleigh branch of the TGWU's cab section, said he was disappointed.
He added: "We're pleased that there have been no similar attacks but there is always a fear that this maniac might strike again. It is an incident which is still very much in the minds of taxi drivers. We would urge anyone who watched the programme who has any relevant information to come forward."
The attacker is described as white, about 5ft 10in, thin, of gaunt appearance, close shaven and wearing a dark-coloured hooded top.
Anyone with information should contact Eastleigh CID on 0845 045 4545 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
