Lest we forget . . . Remembrance Sunday commemorates Armistice Day. Armistice Day is on 11 November.
A two minute silence is observed at 11am on 11th day of the 11th month because this is when the Great War, or World War I, came to end in 1918. Now, in the 21st century, this anniversary is also used to remember all the people who have died in wars since World War I. This includes World War II, the Falklands War, the Gulf War, and conflicts in Bosnia, Rwanda and Kosovo.
The Poppy Appeal is run each year by the Royal British Legion, the charity which supports British men and women who serve, or who have served, their country in the British Armed Forces. Most of us will have had family members who served in World War I and/or World War II, not to mention more recent armed conflicts. Please support this very worthwhile cause.
