Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service tells Ralph Montagu, son of Lord Montagu, to "PULL YOUR FINGER OUT!"

Published: 18th September 2008 14:49

Smoke detectors are an essential part of every home's safety and every family's protection - providing they work! There is a very high percentage of smoke detector ownership in Hampshire; sadly, fire statistics still highlight the lack of functioning smoke alarms in many accidental dwelling fires, with the increased risk of death and injury which this brings.

Not having a smoke detector, or worse, owning a smoke detector that doesn't work puts your loved ones and homes at potential serious risk.

The Hon Ralph Montagu, of the Beaulieu Estate and National Motor Museum, took up the offer of a FREE Home Fire Safety Visit, a service offered to every household in Hampshire. The local fire crew attended Palace House and gave Ralph a fire safety talk to help reduce fire risk in homes and fitted smoke detectors in every room where they were needed.

Ralph is helping us promote Home Fire Safety Visits just as the National Fire Kills advert campaign begins again on TV. The advert shows the horrific aftermath of a fire in the home with a burnt out kitchen providing the backdrop to the scene. Julie Walters fronts the adverts which will be beamed into homes in Hampshire from September 15 to October 12.

Group Manager Carlton Kerr said: "There are simple steps that we can all take to prevent fires occurring in the home, such as ensuring the home has working smoke alarms and an escape route has been planned. And remember Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service is at hand to give advice and help keep your family safe".

Ensuring you stay safe from fire is quick and simple. Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service has provided five essential fire safety tips to help you protect yourself, your family and your home from fire:

  • Step 1 - Fit a smoke alarm on each level of the property. When a fire starts, you only have a few minutes to escape so an early warning is vital. Make sure you replace battery operated smoke alarm units after 10 years. Alternatively consider installing a 10-year battery smoke alarm or mains powered alarm.
  • Step 2 - Test it weekly. A working smoke alarm can buy you valuable time to get out, stay out and call the Fire Service out 999.
  • Step 3 - Plan your escape route. Make sure you and your family know the quickest way out in the event of fire. Consider an alternative route in case your usual one is blocked.
  • Step 4 - Stay safe in the kitchen. This is the area where most house fires start. It only takes a minute to check electrical appliances are switched off. Also, never leave cooking unattended.
  • Step 5 - Ask the experts. Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service offer free home fire risk checks to identify potential fire risks and advise what to do to reduce or prevent them. To find out more, contact www.hantsfire.gov.uk

This service for a free home fire safety visit is open to any and all Hampshire residents regardless of where they live, whether they own the house or rent, and is not means-tested in any way. So if you live in Hampshire, or have friends and family you would like to be safer from fire, then please contact us www.hantsfire.gov.uk
