Eastleigh College recently witnessed the birth of a new qualification for parental birthing partners known as ‘doulas'.
A relatively new idea in the UK, Doulas are experienced, non-medical professionals, whose role is to provide both physical and mental support to couples during childbirth.
Eastleigh College, in conjunction with Hampshire based Baby on Board Doulas, have worked closely with the Council for Awards in Children's Care and Education (CACHE) to pioneer the first officially recognised national qualification for this important role.
"Are aim is to give doulas all across the UK official recognition for the tremendous work they do." Said Laura Davies, Baby on Board Doulas. "It is important that parents know their doulas are properly trained and are experienced in supporting them during the most exciting time of their lives - the birth of their children!"

The first ten students to qualify for the CACHE Level 3 Doula Qualification were presented with certificates by Eastleigh College Chief Executive, Tony Lau-Walker, who added, "Everyone involved has worked extremely hard in creating this important award. We are fortunate to be at its birth and look forward to seeing it grow."
