Police in Eastleigh work with other agencies to tackle distraction burglary and rogue trading

Published: 20th May 2008 19:34

Police in Eastleigh are working with Eastleigh Borough Council and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service to provide advice and assistance to residents of a Bishopstoke street.

Representatives of the three agencies will be in Whalesmead Road between 10am and 2pm on Wednesday, May 21, talking to residents and offering advice to avoid becoming a victim of rogue traders and distraction burglars. Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service will also provide fire prevention advice.

The Hampshire Constabulary Bobby Trust will be attending to fit door chains, locks and mirrors, either on the day or at another arranged time, free of charge.

Police community support officers will be delivering leaflets to all homes in Whalesmead Road a few days before the event with details of the services available.

Crime Prevention Officer Barbara White said: "Distraction burglaries have taken place at a number of properties in Whalesmead Road and we have also received calls relating to suspicious activity and people in the area.

"We hope to speak with as many residents as possible on the day. If the event proves to be successful we may also target other streets in the future."

Anyone requiring crime prevention advice can contact their local Crime Prevention Officer on 0845 045 45 45.

To report suspicious activity or people contact your local police station on 0845 045 45 45. If a crime is in progress or a life is in danger you should dial 999 immediately.

It would be nice if this scheme could be extended across the whole of our area, many of us feel the need to be safe in our homes. Last year I had 6 different callers to my door asking me to change either my gas or electric company, as a mother of young children how do I know who is really calling on me as the ID these people carry say that they are a contractor and after further questioning they are not employed by the gas or electric people but are from an agency working with these bodies. WHO VETS THESE PEOPLE.
