Following a crack down by Safer Neighbourhoods officers from the Eastleigh East police team, crime levels have fallen dramatically in the semi-rural suburb of Fair Oak.

Violence against the person has fallen by 55 per cent from 29 to 13, incidents of shop theft have dropped by a massive 94 per cent from 33 crimes to just two and criminal damage from 54 to 18, a fall of almost 67 per cent. Similarly, rowdy and inconsiderate behaviour, something that can affect large numbers of residents, has fallen by 34 per cent from 100 incidents to 66.
Disappointingly, thefts from motor vehicles rose slightly from 16 crimes to 19 for the same period. Officers are working hard to address this by raising awareness and ensuring that motorists remove items of value when they leave their vehicles unattended.
The figures correspond and relate to the first ten weeks of the police operational year, April 1 to June 18.
These results have been achieved by officers focussing on identified hot-spots under the direction of Safer Neighbourhoods Sergeant Sally Allgrove.
Sergeant Allgrove said: "We are really pleased with these results which have been achieved through a concerted effort between residents and other agencies who were determined to help reduce the number of reported incidents of low level crime that had started to blight the area.
"By talking to residents at Beat Surgeries and while out on patrol, officers were able to gather information that enabled us to identify the key issues of concern. This resulted in high-visibility police patrols in the area at peak times, with officers dealing robustly with anyone who stepped out of line. This work was supplemented by the successful Street Pastors initiative that began in February this year.
Sgt Allgrove concluded: "While we have managed to reduce crime levels, it is important that we continue to work together to maintain them and to ensure that Fair Oak continues to be a low crime area to live. We would therefore urge residents to continue reporting incidents to us along with any information that helps identify offenders."
