Eastleigh College's Red Carpet Restaurant and kitchens has played host to the Rotary Young Chef of the Year 2008 district finals, which was organised by The Rotary Club, in their search for Britain's best young chef.
Thirteen young people took part in the contest, ranging in age from 13 to 17, and were required to prepare a three course healthy meal for two people, costing under £14. There were three judges, appointed by the organising committee, one of whom was Eastleigh College's Lecturer and Chef, Alan Humphrey. "I'm looking for flare, but most of all I'm looking for taste and quality", said Alan.
The winning contestant was Hannah Cox, of St Anne's School, Alderney, who cooked up a dish of king prawns in white wine and garlic butter sauce for starters, rack of lamb with crusted herb coating served with a red currant and mint jus for main course and caramelised apples on a cinnamon brioche for dessert. In second place was Kirsti Maybank of Twynham School, Christchurch. Both girls will now go on to the regional finals in Somerset, in March.
The College's Red Carpet Restaurant is open to the public for three course lunches for £5 and four course dinners for £14. For menu information and to make a reservation, call 023 891 1053.
