MEND Success at Fleming Park Leisure Centre

Over the last 9 weeks, families have been taking part in MEND, a healthy living programme at Fleming Park Leisure Centre. The programme is aimed at overweight children and seeks to help them lose weight through education and exercise.
At the end of the current programme the children have collectively lost 8 kg and 18.5 cm around their waists.
During the programme the families learnt about nutrition and their families diets, visited a local supermarket, learnt how to read nutrition labels and had a food tasting session amongst others. During each session the children have also had an hour of exercise.
The emphasis for the programme is healthy living for the whole family and all the families who have completed the programme have had a positive outcome.
Jo Cook, Programme Manager said ‘The programme requires a great deal of commitment from all the families but those who have completed it have felt it was worth it. We are extremely proud of all the participants and have seen them grow in confidence over the term.'
