As Councillor Brian Bayford concluded his year in office as The Worshipful the Mayor of Fareham, one of his last duties was to visit staff and children at The Rainbow Centre, for whom he had raised over £20,000 and present them with a cheque.
When the Fareham Borough Councillor for Park Gate Ward, Brian Bayford looks back on his year as The Worshipful Mayor of Fareham, one of his most impressive achievements has to be the amount of money he raised for local charities.
During the final few days of his office, he visited one of his adopted charities, The Rainbow Centre for Conductive Education in Palmerston Drive, with the former Mayoress Mrs Susan Bayford and presented a cheque for £20,000.
Fundraising activities for the Mayor's chosen charities made an impressive start in 2011 when a Piano Recital organised by a committee chaired by former Mayor of Fareham Leslie Keeble raised £15,000 alone. Further fundraising initiatives that took place throughout the year included lunches, quiz nights and special events such as ‘Last Night at the Proms', the Police Band Concert and the Mayor's Annual Charity Ball.
‘We are so grateful for the support from Cllr Bayford's year in office,' said Julie Woodward, Community & Events Fundraiser for The Rainbow Centre, which supports children with Cerebral Palsy, adults recovering from strokes or with MS and Parkinson's disease and the families who care for them.
‘Donations such as these are vital to keep the centre open for the children and adults who need it. With our running costs totalling £45,000 a month, we do not receive any statutory funding, so this donation is a welcome help to our fundraising efforts.'
