In and Around Paulsgrove in the 1960s and 1970s

Author: Rick Whitehill Published: 28th April 2014 19:34

By Rick Whitehill

These pictures date from the early 1960s to about 1974. I lived in Chedworth with my two brothers and three sisters until I got married in 1976. My dad Les lived there right up until last April when he passed away aged 92. The picture of the bikes includes Me, George Warren, Steve Shute and Keith Vickers. We were inseperable in the mid to late 1960s. This was our Q Bikes club posing opposite my house with our new RSW16 bikes.

The Triumph Herald was my first car, I remember having to borrow 30 quid off my dad to insure it.

I have fond memories of my time growing up in Paulsgrove. From going into the caves up the chalk pit to camping on the hill and sledging on home made sledges. Other names from that time are, John saunders, Guss Gardener, Charlie Quick, Mick Marsh and Maralyn Dunn etc. As young skin heads we would meet up at Leith Avenue shops and just wander around, maybe get a free bus ride to Cosham from "Dadio" the bus conductor. I remember we also used to go to the church youth club and later on the Grove Club.

Me with my infants class about 1960. Can you spot yourself ?

I went to Paulsgrove infants, juniors & senior school between 1959 - 1970. My maiden name was Hooper & I lived in Ridgeway close. I remember Mrs Butler her sister Miss Fields, Mr Clarke (music) Miss Elkestone (Geography), Miss Holland (maths) Mr Yule (English) and the science teacher who I think was called Mr Hartfree or something similar.

Hi Bev, nice to hear from you. Yes it could have been Mr Hartfreed, such a long time ago to remember all the names :-). I can't remember the French teachers name, probably would have problems pronouncing it anyway. Hope life is treating you well? X

Rich. One name you are not sure of above was Peter Hatton? I'm not sure who Jimmy might have been tho. I remember being in the same class. Head's name was Mr Collie in the early Junior years, remember him when the Aberfan disaster happened. He came from either Aberfan or nearby. Not sure who took his place tho when he left. Form teacher could have been Mr Goddard maybe?
