Memories of Paulsgrove Secondary Modern School
Published: 23rd March 2011 20:28 |
This photo has been sent in by Alan Winter. It was taken in the early 60s of boys from Paulsgrove Junior Boys School. Are you in it?
The above photo was sent in by Lynne Pritchard who believes it was taken around 1972. Also in the photo is (l-r) Kim jones, Janice McDonald, Pauline Rolfe and Jackie Evans, with Lynne on the far right. Lynne said, "We are dressed in white plastic bags cut up and think we danced to Telstar. I remember feeling quite chuffed that I had a main role, I was never very confident so was a bit embarrassed as well!"
The above photo was sent in by Barry Jenson and shows pupils in the 1st year catering class at Paulsgrove Secondary Modern. Barry can name a few but can you add any more names?
Barry said, "I know a few of the lads but I'm not quite sure. The one on the back row far right is my brother- in- law, Stewart Henderson. Also, on the far left on the back row is his old pal Adrian Synes. The year is about 1960. The teacher on the back row I believe was Mr Davies. The teacher on the front row is the Head, Mr Street. To his left I believe is an old pal of mine Terry Watson."
Teachers at Paulsgrove Secondary Modern sent in by Barry Jenson.
Did you go to Paulsgrove Secondary Modern? Which teachers do you remember and what were they like?

Great to hear from you all. Cheers Colin

I went to Paulsgrove Secondary School for girls from 1967-1972. There was a Beverley (was it Hodge?) in my class, whose best friend was Daphne White - great gals, had loads of laughs with them. Also remember Jane Edwards, Tina Brushwood, the class clown Debra Kessick, Janice Lawler...
The teachers in my time were Mr. Clarke for music - I remember we sang 'The Ash Grove' a lot, and he wouldn't let us near any instruments, which were locked away in a cupboard. There was a (Swedish?) lady who took us for cookery, who got engaged to the rather dishy geography teacher. Mrs Dollimore ("Blood will flow!"), and her sister Miss Dyer (my favourite). I remember us doing West Side Story as an end-of-term musical and the local paper trying to make out that the fight scene between the Jets and the Sharks was a real fight between the kids on stage - they really had it in for that school. I left in 1972 and moved away (oop north - aargh!) and often wonder if the school is still there and what happened to everyone. All such a long time ago now. Strange to think that those eleven - to - fifteen year olds are now fifty-somethings. Must go - I feel a lie-down coming on!

Oh and yes we are all 50 somethings scary ay. I might go and do the same and have a lld. Bev
P.S No stuff that l'm gonna have a beer hahahaha

Just realised I've got you mixed up with a girl called Beverley Hobbs (quite a few brain cells have died since then!) - I used to have a really awful first name (changed it by deed poll as soon as I was 18) so I'm remaining anonymous - no-one would remember me anyway - but it's good to look back and remember old times.

Sandra jogged my memory with Mr Howarth and Mrs Jennings. I keep remembering more names since starting this. I think there were about 36 girls in my class - I left just before the boys came - great timing! Anyone remember any of these: Susan Exton, Janice Newman, Linda Turner, Lynne Pritchard, Janet Fisher?

Here's hoping some will be posted on here.

School friends, Chris Thompson, now living in California, Keith Pullen, London way now, Phil Bailey-Green, departed, Bernie Young, the odd email exchanged, and the rest whose contact long lost.
Left Paulsgrove in 1971, moved around Hampshire before discovering deepest Dorset. Now retired.
So what did Paulsgrove Secondary Modern do for us? We all left with a good education, some qualifications, a good handle on life and most importantly a job. "as we set out on life's highway to the life that lies ahead, remember the school and its teaching and all those things that were said".

I had the misfortune of having him as my headmaster (of a small private school in chichester) from the late 70s onwards. The reason I ask is I am researching the history of that school (which now been shut down!) and anything on Bowler would prove invaluable to me, such as what was he like back then, the subjects he taught etc. Was he always the weirdo that he was in later years?
Any pictures of him would be great too
Thanks in advance Paul
