St George's Day and the Flag - Should We Do More?

Published: 21st April 2009 09:28

 By Barry Faust

Well it's that time of year again. St Patrick's day has passed as has St David's day. St Andrew's will not be far away either. The thing is, most people celebrate these days except ours,by that I mean St George's Day.

I annually try and arrange the council to fly the St George's flag on this day as it is a council in England paid for by the people of Portsmouth that live England.

Most people will now be saying so what!! Well just think - nobody really celebrates St George's Day and it is about time we did, not only as Country or County but as a City or Town and what better way to get Cosham on the map than by having an annual St George's Day parade(aka waterlooville) with the local scouts/brownies and/or TA marching down the high street followed by morris dancing in the precinct and all shops that are flying the flag offering anyone wearing a St George's Flag or cross to be given 10% discount in the local shops for example.

What do you think? Is it about time we celebrated this annual event properly? I for one will be emailing Daryn Brewer (chair of the Cosham Business Association) to let him know my views.

What does flying the cross of St George flag on City Buildings add to our quality of life? In my opinion, nothing.

I have lived in America, where virtually every house and building is adorned with a Stars & Stripes, and I did not find that it brought a greater feeling of 'belonging'!

I do not feel that I need to wave a flag to let everyone know that I am English. I know that I am, and do not need to take our advertising to let everyone know.

I am happy for my City to fly the Union flag. That is the unifying flag that identifies Britain as being Great Britain!

There is a saying, 'if you've got it, flaunt it!'

That may sit well with some countries, but if you are English, you know it and don't have to flaunt it!

England is being ruled by Scots' who have for 12 years seen fit to systematically smear and destroy any allegiance to England and an English Identity. How is this done Firstly' by denying English history to be taught in schools - Secondly' by political correctness language which refuses to achnowledge that England and the English as a recognisable Nationality any more. And in 12 years all manner of national identity in England ONLY''
insists we refer to ourselves as British! which might give the impression that the Scots Irish and Welsh would lidentity with this also? NOT SO. The Scots consider themselves Scottish - the Irish to be Irish and the Welsh to be Welsh.
There has been an insiduous campaign by all govenment departments to suggest that being english is somehow tantamount to being racist. Even though we fought two world wars?
Flying the Cross of St George is now banned in many counties as St Georges
is seen as a racist organisation.
And to demonstrate my point I enclose a recent article in the Daily Star which
illustrates how the debate continues and is fought by many like myself who
refuse to let our nationality die!

The Daily Star_________________________
FURY erupted yesterday after it was revealed a family charity event to celebrate the life of St George is set to be banned.

Councillor Yvonne Davies claimed the parade created an “unhealthy atmosphere” and inspired young boys to be racist.

She wrote: “It is not only the parade which is the problem, but the tribal excitement it creates.”

Sandwell Council in West Bromwich, West Mids, voted to withdraw its financial support and leave organisers with the “impossible” task of raising £10,000 to cover costs.

But organiser Trevor Collins, of the Stone Cross Saint George Association, said: “To suggest the parade is racist is ridiculous and offensive.

“When you see the kids, everyone out having fun, it is a beautiful sight. Everyone is welcome.

“The council’s decision means we have to foot the bills for insurance and security. We have got to come up with £10,000 in two months, which seems impossible.”

The parade, involving 15,000 people, on April 23 is backed by the Royal British Legion and attended by ex-servicemen.

Organisers said one of the aims of the event, held since 1998, is to reclaim the Saint George Cross from right-wingers and make it a source of pride.

John Midgley, of the Campaign Against Political Correctness, said: “It is an outrageous decision.

“There is nothing racist about celebrating the day of the patron saint of England.”

Thanks diane at least someone on here supports and understands this view.Cyril's views I will say are how the English used to think beofe we started getting ripped off by the Scottish and Welsh through the barnett formula now we know better and we have to assert our national identity and one way of doing that is by flying the flag as much as we can and taking it back from the racists.

I say wake up England, you are loosing your identity and your country the longer we stay in Europe and under a British party things will never change that is why I am voting English Democrats and every oppurtunity as they are the only credible alternative.

The English country has already been removed by Europe. England is not a recognised nation. If English people do not insist on being recognised we will go on being ignored. If national pride is racist, when shown by St George's Cross, then it follows that all celebrations of national pride are racist.
