The new gym at Paulsgrove community centre is now up and running with a fantastic new space - additional machinery was generously donated by Portsmouth City Council when the Victoria Baths closed. The gym now has more weights machines and another treadmill.
We now also have Spin bikes, so watch this space in the New year if "spinning" is your thing......
We have added Adult circuits to our timetable - this is a mixed class and is suitable for people who wish to see maximum results in minimum time - perfect for that Christmas rush. Taking place Wednesdays at 6pm it also fits in with the busy day before becoming a satisfied couch potato for the evening !
If you want to try your hand at something new in the New Year, why not try badminton?
On Wednesdays at 8pm we welcome all abilities and we have the equipment, if you don't have your own.
If your New Year's Resolution is to give up the weed
Everyone knows that it is pretty normal for weight to creep on, or in some cases to pile on. When you give up it's important for you to understand the reason for this and that the weight gain is probably not simply down to consuming huge amounts of extra food.
1. Nicotine in cigarettes speeds up your metabolism. Effects last for about 30 mins after each one.
2. Nicotine suppresses your appetite;
To combat these two facts -
Start by working out how many calories you are currently consuming each day. Plan deliberately to eat about 300 fewer, or do 300 calories' worth of activity each day to make up for the fall in metabolism.
People who smoked 24 cigarettes a day or fewer have been shown to limit their weight gain to an average of 4 and a half lb by doing 1-2 hours of vigorous physical activity each week.
What about finding that exercise class in your area that you used to enjoy before you found it difficult to catch your breath ?
Take advantage of the promotion running in partnership with Healthy Living Centre Smoking Cessation group and Paulsgrove Fitness gym (free induction and 16 sessions at £1.75)
Exchange that breakfast cigarette for the healthier alternative, and don't forget the healthy snacks to distract from your hunger pangs !!!!
If you haven't already heard...... Our new idea to make it even cheaper for you to use your local fitness gym
£20 per month standing order - this offer includes unlimited access during opening hours, use of parent & child class and participation in Adult Circuits class. This could amount to £11 per week. (This is full membership and use of the gym twice a week)

Volunteers are always welcome at the centre, people with all types of skills and interests could help us with gardening, maintenance work, the café, public- relations or being part of the Association of The Paulsgrove Community Centre, and you could help make decisions regarding the future of the Centre. For some people it could be a step on the ladder back to work and for others a real sense of belonging and worth.... Try it, come and have a chat.
We do not have a café at the moment, could you be the person to start a new catering business? Enquiries to the manager Marie Adams, 023 9237 0643. |
We would like to hear from you, with ideas, questions, thoughts or offers to help us maintain and improve the quality and quantity of the service that we give. Please feel free to speak to a member of staff on duty, write an old- fashioned letter, send an e- mail or telephone us. Your interest will help us grow.
