Tenors and Bass Singers Needed to Portsmouth Festival Choir
| Published: 23rd January 2012 12:08 |
The Portsmouth Festival Choir has been around now for over 40 years and is one of the cities choirs that regularly performs concerts. In the last year it has sung a full version of Handel's Messiah, commissioned and performed a special piece called the "Shipping Forecast" by Cecilia McDowell, sung Handel's Dixit Dominus and is now rehearsing Mozart's Mass in C minor.
However, it is a choir with a need and that need is more tenors and bass singers. In other words more men, although a lady could quite easily be a tenor. Michael Birchmore joined the choir a year ago as it was his new year's resolution and when he saw that the choir was going to be performing Handel's Messiah no other choir was going to win. He passed the simple audition and has loved every minute of it since.
"Getting together with so many other people and blasting out these fantastic works is an experience that is fantastic. So uplifting. Not only that but I've made some great friends and been privileged to achieve something I never thought possible."
In fact Michael enjoyed it so much he also sings with their smaller events choir. This choir gets booked to perform at weddings, funerals and other special events such as the St George's day concerts in Emsworth.
"Being in the events choir gives me the opportunity to sing different types of songs. Whereas the main choir is more classically orientated, the events choir can sing anything from Beatles to Beethoven."
The choir rehearses every Monday evening in the City of Portsmouth Girls School, near St Mary's church between 7 and 9.15pm.
