Demolition of the old Hillside youth and community centre in Paulsgrove is under way, to make way for a modern £1.4m building.
Work on building a new youth and community centre is due to start in August. The new centre is expected to open a year later.
Planned facilities include a youth centre upstairs, with a kitchen, a TV, video games, a pool table, a lounge area, art facilities and computers. Downstairs will be a sports hall and two community meeting rooms.
The new centre is designed to serve Paulsgrove and Wymering.
The council decided to build a combined centre after Wymering community centre was destroyed in a fire, and the Hillside building came to the end of its working life.
The new centre, approved by Sport England, will be the third such building on the Cheltenham Road site.
Cllr Rob Wood, the council's Cabinet Member for Children and Education, said: "At a time of cutbacks, it's good to be looking forward to a new, modern building for young people and other residents in Paulsgrove and Wymering.
"It wasn't possible for us to provide two new buildings, but this flexible, multi-purpose centre will be able to cater for people from a wide area.
"Many people have fond memories of the previous buildings on the Hillside site and at Wymering, and I'm sure this new centre will be part of people's lives in the same way."
