Celebrate Dickens' Birthday Where it All Started

If you are missing Strictly and Great Expectations leaves you wanting more, why not celebrate a birthday in style at the Groundlings Theatre.
The Groundings Theatre is the very place where Charles Dickens' story begins, as Elizabeth Dickens went into labour with her famous son whilst attending a dance the evening before.
Groundlings, based in the Old Benny, Portsea, recognises this unique link to one of the worlds greatest writers and will be hosting a week of events and activities for the whole family.
To celebrate Dickens' birthday celebrations, the theatre will be transformed into a living museum featuring characters from Dickens' novels, workshops that will give young people the chance to see what being a child in Victorian Portsmouth was like and to open the week, that fateful ball will be recreated.
Break out your ballgowns, iron your cravats and join us in a unique recreation of the 1812 ball on Monday 6th February. An evening of dance and celebrations features the Regency Dancers and musicians. With help on hand to glide you around the dance floor, come alone or with a partner and let the dances of the day take you back in style.
Unsure what to wear? Groundlings has an extensive wardrobe collection from which you can hire your outfit. Whether you fancy yourself as a Regency lady or Lord or a Dickensian character, Groundings wardrobe is waiting to assist.
The Old Benny is also serving up a two course meal for £9.50 in our downstairs tavern prior to the ball from 5.30pm.
