Taking place in Albert Road each performance will be staged in a non-theatrical setting and the audience will guided on a short stroll between each venue in turn, as Albert Road plays host to this most different of Dickensian evenings.
Cop The Needle Productions present A Ballad of Charles Dickens by Stuart Olesker and John Stanton
"Among his many talents, Dickens had a gift for performance and a delight in song. We feel that he would have enjoyed this highly acclaimed production which interweaves theatre and narrative ballad in a celebration of, and commentary on, his remarkable life and work."
VENUE: Bonzo Studio, Albert Road
New Apollo present The Signalman
By Charles Dickens
"A signalman occupying a lonely, windswept and remote outpost suffers visitations from spirits which presage death and disaster on the line; he shares the information of these portents of doom with a visiting gentleman, but will his warnings be heeded and if not, what terrible fate will come to pass?
Experience one of Dickens' best short stories brought to life on stage by New Apollo, Portsmouth's own professional theatre company - 5 Stars, The News."
VENUE: The stables at The Phoenix Inn, Exmouth Road
Alchemy Productions present an extract from Barnaby Rudge
By Charles Dickens
"London's burning again.... A tale of the riots of 1780. A rare chance to discover ‘Barnaby Rudge' in a new stage adaptation to celebrate Dickens' Bicentenary in the city of his birth. Showcasing emerging talent in local people from Portsmouth and Hampshire.
Passionate as he was about social justice, in ‘Barnaby Rudge', Dickens was also asking the questions that many ask today... Why the gap between rich and poor? What can be done about illiteracy and family conflict? How can we deal with religious intolerance? But this is Dickens, so alongside these dark and serious matters there will be plenty to laugh at and some wonderfully grotesque comic characters. It will be an extraordinary show.
VENUE: The Wine Vaults, Albert Road
Portsmouth Players will also be presenting a Dickensian excerpt at Bangkok Restaurant, Albert Road
