Hampshire County Council's annual Civic Day 2008 focused on Hampshire's history. The aim of the day was that the civic heads would not only learn about some of county's historical origins and how the area has developed over many years, but also find out what attractions and services are available to help residents discover the heritage of Hampshire.
The day kicked off with a visit to one of the most widely recognised symbols of medieval mythology and an iconic piece of Hampshire's history, the Round Table in the Great Hall, Winchester. Last year more than 150,000 tourists and visitors went to see the Round Table, which was recently restored through a series of delicate timber boarding and paintwork repairs and a programme of cleaning.
They also visited Hampshire Record Office where they were shown a film by the Wessex Film and Sound Archive, which gave them a view of what the county's districts and boroughs looked like at the turn of the 20th Century. They also saw the County Archivist and conservators repairing ancient documents and maps deposited at the Record Office.
The Chairman of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Michael Woodhall, said:
"I wanted the County Council's annual civic day to be a showcase of Hampshire's heritage. The county has a lot to offer in terms of historical visitor attractions and to help people discover more about their own past.
People are now more interested in finding out about their family history and about where they live or grew up and the Record Office is a wonderful source of information to aid this process.
I went away wanting everyone to know what fascinating information is now available about where we have come from and I know that many of the other civic heads who attended will likewise be returning to find out more or encouraging others to do so."
