Safer Neighbourhoods Teams in Winchester work together for Not in my Neighbourhood Week

Published: 10th October 2008 15:35

Safer Neighbourhoods Hampshire

Police in Winchester are cracking down on crime and anti-social behaviour during Not In My Neighbourhood Week (October 13 - 19).

As part of the Home Office initiative, Winchester's Southgate Safer Neighbourhoods Team and Northgate Safer Neighbourhoods Team will be working together to tackle offences that have a detrimental impact on the quality of life for residents.

Officers will be tackling a range of issues across both Safer Neighbourhoods Team areas, through various operations.  These operations will focus on distraction burglary, drug use, violent crime, anti-social behaviour and vehicle nuisance.

As well as targeting those who commit these sorts of crimes, officers will also be speaking to members of the community and will be able to give advice about measures they can take to reduce the chance of becoming a victim of these sorts of crimes.

Sergeant John Stribley said:

"Our Safer Neighbourhoods Teams are constantly striving to improve the quality of life for residents in Winchester and Not in My Neighbourhood Week is another opportunity to tackle issues which have a big impact on local communities.

I would encourage members of the community to contact us and let us know about any problems relating to crime or disorder that they may be having in their area.  Information is always treated in strict confidence and we will be keen to act on your information to improve the quality of life of those living, working and visiting Winchester."

Anyone who would like to contact the Southgate or Northgate Safer Neighbourhoods Teams should phone North Walls police station on 0845 045 45 45 or send their information to winchester.northgate.snt@hampshire.pnn.police.uk or winchester.southgate.snt@hampshire.pnn.police.uk.

Throughout the two counties, Hampshire Constabulary's Safer Neighbourhoods officers and staff have been busy planning a range of activities from school visits and beat surgeries to community clear up days and enforcement work which will directly impact on the quality of life for people living in certain neighbourhoods.

The aim of the week is to help communities get to know the people working in their neighbourhoods, and to work together on the issues that communities say are important.

Chief Inspector Tim Ashman, Hampshire Constabulary's Safer Neighbourhoods lead, said:

"This national week of activity throws the work of our Safer Neighbourhood teams, the other units around the force who support them and our partners into the spotlight.

The reality, however, is that this activity is going on in your community all the time. We have delivered on our promise to provide a dedicated officer or team for every neighbourhood in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Providing the team only goes part way towards improving neighbourhoods - we need communities to get involved with their local officers and tell us what's important, and what's going on in their street, village, town or city, so that we can work together to keep neighbourhoods safe."

Residents are also being encouraged to find out more about getting involved with Neighbourhood Watch schemes, by joining an existing scheme or helping to set one up in their area. Neighbourhood Watch helps build community spirit and also creates a vital link between police and communities.

Find out more about Neighbourhood Watch by contacting your Safer Neighbourhoods team, either in person or through the post code search at http://www.hampshire.police.uk/, or visit the Neighbourhood Watch website at http://www.hantsnwa.org.uk/.
