New police appeal after Morestead crash

Published: 10th October 2008 17:56

Police who are dealing with a multi-vehicle collision on the Morestead Road near Owslebury on Thursday, October 9, today made a new appeal to a driver who may have been at or near the scene.

The collision, shortly before 5pm, left a 43-year-old Winchester man with critical injuries when his black motorcycle was in collision with a black Vauxhall Astra.

Police are appealing to the driver of a silver or light-coloured car, possibly a hatchback, to come forward.

Cosham Roads Policing Sergeant Simon Goss said:

"This car was northbound on the Morestead Road, going towards Morestead, when it may have struck a pheasant.

I need to reassure the driver that he or she is not suspected of anything, but that person may have important information about the circumstances of the collision.  We do need to hear from you."

The incident occurred near Whitechapel Farm when a northbound Rover MG, driven by a 24-year-old Eastleigh man, came around a left hand bend and was in collision with a northbound Peugeot 306, driven by a 24-year-old Winchester man.

A southbound Vauxhall Astra, driven by a 45-year-old Waterlooville woman, swerved to avoid the northbound collision and travelled into the opposite carriageway.  The Yamaha motorcycle, travelling north around the left hand bend, was confronted by the collision.  The rider fell from the bike and collided with the side of the Astra.

He was taken by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition with head, chest and spinal injuries.  The Astra driver was taken to Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester, where she was treated for shock and released.

The driver who is being sought or anyone else with information is asked to contact Operation Vallo at Cosham Roads Policing Unit on 0845 045 45 45 or the anonymous Crimestoppers charity line on 0800 555 111.
