Employee numbers skills success will help local charities

Published: 21st February 2008 21:19

The Winchester & Eastleigh Learning Centres, owned by Brighter Prospects Limited, have launched a new initiative called Maths for My Charity designed to increase the maths skills and qualifications of employees and to help local charities.

Anyone in work who has not yet gained a GCSE in Maths, is offered the opportunity to do free Learndirect on-line courses to improve their numeracy skills and gain a valuable qualification.

We offer an extra incentive of £25 for the learner on passing either a Level 1 or a Level 2 Test plus an extra £25 donation to a charity selected by their employer.

Those volunteering to study will do a short initial assessment to establish their starting skill level and will then be provided with the necessary on-line courses to progress step by step, with full tutor support. The courses are individual, discrete and self-paced and can be done in centre, on a computer at work or at home. Just 4 hours a week of study, fitted in at times to suit the learner, can lead to a test and a qualification in next to no time.

We hope companies will promote this great training idea to their teams and encourage participation for two very good reasons:

  • The personal achievement of valuable skills.
  • The knowledge that others in need are also going to benefit through the charity selected.

Just think, if a company had 5, 10 or 20 people taking courses, that would generate very valuable contributions to the charity concerned, as well as improving the efficiency and qualifications of employees.

Where individuals, companies and nominated charities agree, the Observer Newspaper will run short feature articles on the charities concerned and give due recognition to those giving up some time to take part in Maths for My Charity.

Employers and employees: please download an application form.
