Are you eligible for a free bus pass??

Published: 24th April 2007 14:31

Free bus travel for another year

Free countywide travel for pensioners on all local bus services continues from April 1st 2007 until 31st March 2008. A deal has been negotiated following a successful first year of the Scheme across the county.

The 2007/8 Concessionary Fares Scheme for the Boroughs and Districts of Hertfordshire , issued by Hertfordshire County Council on Thursday 1 March, is operational from Sunday 1 April 2007 .

The Scheme continues to be in excess of the statutory minimum scheme laid down by the government in the March 2005 budget speech - which provided only for free off-peak travel for people aged 60 and over within Borough boundaries.

The Hertfordshire Scheme:

  • provides for free travel for people aged 60 and over countywide on all local bus journeys beginning or ending in Hertfordshire;
  • Allows bus pass holders to travel on buses without time restrictions;
  • Provides a single permit (together with a new or current photo card) for all applicants;
  • Incorporates all existing Scheme arrangements. For Hertsmere, this includes all our former No Fare "Zonal" route arrangements, together with the supported routes outside the county to destinations such as Barnet Hospital;
  • "Existing Scheme arrangements" still includes free passes for those aged 16 or over who are:
    1. registered blind/partially sighted with Hertfordshire County Council;
    2. certified by their GP as having a learning difficulty (which must have existed from childhood)
    3. physically disabled (this must be a permanent condition certified by their GP)

How to apply

Renewals

If you already have a permit then you do not need to do anything to renew - you will automatically receive a new permit in the post during March 2007

If your photocard is due to expire on 31 March 2007 you will receive a letter asking you to:

  • Obtain a new passport style photograph;
  • Write your name and your existing photocard number on the back of your new photograph;
    Securely attach the photograph to the slip below;
  • Hand this letter in to the Council’s Local Area Office, or return it to the Revenues Section in the prepaid envelope provided, by 09 March 2007;
  • Continue to use your current Bus Pass in the meantime.
