Hertsmere strikes gold at youth games

Published: 22nd May 2007 13:12

Hertsmere's future sports stars took part in the Hertfordshire Youth Games at the weekend - with Team Hertsmere's picking up its best ever result.

Over 120 young people represented Hertsmere, making it the biggest team ever entered by the council in the games history. Colin Jackson amongst other sporting heroes were on hand to offer encouragement and present prizes at the games, which was held at the Hertfordshire Sports Village in Hatfield.

The council, sponsored by Cardif Pinnacle Insurance Co-ordinated, organised teams from across the borough in conjunction with local schools and community sport clubs. There were a number of sporting successes, with Hertsmere picking up gold in the boy's basketball event, silver in badminton and netball, and the team as a whole gaining its highest ever points tally.

Deputy Mayor, Councillor Martin Saunders who attended the event, said: "All the young people involved seemed to have so much fun and enthusiasm during the games. They were a credit to their schools, parents and respective clubs. I'd like to thank Cardif Pinnacle for sponsoring Hertsmere's team and raising the profile of sport at a grass roots level within the community."

Media Relations Manager at Cardif Pinnacle Pauline Duggan, adds: "We are absolutely delighted to be associated with supporting Hertsmere's entry into the 2007 Hertfordshire Youth Games. All the children have had a great weekend of sport and hopefully for many of the participants sport will become a regular activity within their life."

The Youth Games took place on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 May. The sporting competition is for young people held between each of the ten boroughs in the county. The games involve 11 different sports with 20 different categories.
