A Novelist's Diary - Part 1

Published: 26th April 2007 22:07

Who would be a novelist? Only an insane person who likes being driven to the edge of insanity every day…

Let me introduce myself. I am that insane person. It was always my dream, my aspiration to become a novelist and write that definitive book that everyone would talk about to their family, friends and, eventually, the world…

Fifty years on and I’m still dreaming! Then one night I faced the ultimate dream, the grim reaper… That was it, wake up time, no more dreams, I was going to do it before it was too late…

And so it began…

My calm, normal life went into freefall. No more cosy evenings watching TV, munching chocolate and chit chatting with hubby and friends. I have to write that novel, 90,000 words and when am I going to do it? I have a full-time job, have to pay rent so cannot afford to give it up. I have a husband, a house to run, family to care for, friends to see and the daily grind of life and its trials and tribulations, but I have that dream and the grim reaper waiting just around the corner…

Then the ‘light bulb’ goes on! I will write at night. I don’t sleep anyway. I wonder around the house during the early hours going mad while my dearly beloved snores away oblivious to my nightly torture. Yes, that’s it. I will write between the hours of 10.00 p.m and 2.00 a.m. It won’t interfere with anybody. I will be tired, but happy and fulfilled after creating that ‘masterpiece’ and, best bit of all, able to sleep. I can keep my job, pay the rent, and continue to deal with the daily grind of life while I write that definitive novel that the world is just waiting to read…

Easy…

Three years, three books later, and I have finally achieved that dream, but boy, oh boy has my life changed…

Tune in next time for an insight into the insane world of a novelist…
