Only One Threatened Post Office is Saved

Whitwell Post OfficePost Office Ltd announced its decisions on the future of four local post office branches on Wednesday (17 September) following a six-week public consultation that ended on 26 August 2008.
Despite very strong campaigns by local people, just one of the four post offices threatened for closure in our area has been saved - Whitwell Post Office (62 High Street, Whitwell, Hitchin SG4 8AG).
The following three post offices will close by the end of 2008:
Blakes Corner: 99-100 Ickleford Road, Hitchin SG5 1TL
Nearest Alternative 1:Redhill Road, 12 Redhill Road, Hitchin, SG5 2NJ
Nearest Alternative 2: Highbury, 20-21 Highbury Road, Hitchin, SG4 9RZ
St Ippolyts: Waterdell Lane, St Ippolyts, Hitchin SG4 7RB
Nearest Alternative 1: Highbury, 20-21 Highbury Road, Hitchin, SG4 9RZ
Nearest Alternative 2: Hitchin, T Brooker & Sons Ltd, 39 Bucklersbury, Hitchin, SG5 1BQ
Hexton: New Cottages, Hexton, Hitchin SG5 3JD
Nearest Alternative 1: Barton-Le-Clay, 29 Bedford Road, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedford, MK45 4LL
Nearest Alternative 2: Shillington, 55 High Road, Shillington, Hitchin, SG5 3LP
Herts County Council is concerned about the effects of these and 33 other post office closures in Herts on local people and wants to find some practical ways to help. It is therefore seeking further talks with the Post Office.
