Hitchin Museum Helps Launch the Cultural Olympiad

Published: 20th September 2008 13:15
On Saturday 27 September Hitchin Museum is taking part in ‘Open Weekend', the national celebrations to launch the Cultural Olympiad of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The London 2012 Games are about more than sport. They will also celebrate cultures, people and languages - in London, the UK and around the world. The Cultural Olympiad is a UK wide, four-year celebration of cultures on a scale that has never been done before. The Cultural Olympiad will provide everyone across the country with the opportunity to experience unique events and projects inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic spirit.

All are welcome at Hitchin Museum (left) at Paynes Park on 27th September between 2pm and 4pm where you wil be able to make an Olympic medal to take away, see its Sporting Showcase, and have a go at Olympic puzzles and colouring. Letchworth Museum is also taking part in the 'Open Weekend', and earlier in the day - between 10am and 12noon - you can enjoy its Chinese display, and make Chinese fans and lanterns to take home.

Cllr. Tricia Gibbs (right), Portfolio Holder for cultural activities, says ‘I am delighted that the North Hertfordshire District museums are playing their part in the launch of the Cultural Olympiad'.

Both museums are also taking part in the People's Record, a national community project to record experiences of the UK hosting the 2012 Olympic Games. Your comments will form part of BBC Memoryshare - a growing collection of living memories from the 1900s to the present day. Hitchin and Letchworth Museums are proud to be two of the few museums in the East of England to have been awarded a national grant towards this work.

For a full list of Open Weekend events see the London 2012 website.
