Four Contenders for Hitchin Churchgate Area Regeneration Announced

Published: 20th September 2008 21:32
North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC) has announced the four firms that have been shortlisted to bid for the multi-million pound regeneration of the Hitchin Churchgate shopping centre and surrounding area.

The process started with the publication of the contract notice on 23 May 2008 in the Official Journal of the European Union. Following a thorough evaluation of all applicants as part of the Pre-Qualification stage of the procurement process four firms have been ‘Invited to Participate in Dialogue', which is the next stage of the procurement process.

The organisations are:

  • Crest Nicholson Regeneration Ltd
  • Kier Property Ltd
  • Simons Development Ltd
  • Thornfield Properties Plc

Initial launch meetings have been held with all four firms and the Dialogue phase will see the shortlisted bidders enter into negotiations with the Council, addressing the key issues for the Hitchin Churchgate regeneration. After this the final stage is the invitation to tender, which should take place in July 2009. This will ultimately lead to the announcement of the successful development partner in August 2009.

Cllr FJ Smith, Leader of the Council said: "Town centres are a top priority for the Council and we are very pleased with the quality of the organisations we have been able to shortlist. We are excited at the prospect of having a high quality development which delivers our vision for the Town Centre."

Councillor Richard Thake, Portfolio Holder for Planning said: "The Council is delighted that this process is continuing to move forward and look forward to the submission of detailed designs that are innovative whilst being sympathetic to and in keeping with our historic market town. Even in the present economic climate, it is pleasing to see that Hitchin is able to attract quality bidders ".
