On September the 18th, Andrew Surry of the Midland Railway Society will give an illustrated talk on the subject of "The Midland Railway and Its Impact on Victorian Society".
This promises to be a fascinating talk, not only for railway enthusiasts but for anyone interested in Social history and the Victorian period. The talk will cover the history of the railway, its arrival in and impact on Hitchin, the rise of cheap excursions, the role of women, the use of railways in political campaigning, and more.
Also at the Hitchin Museum from 6th September to 4th November is a display on the Midland Railway in Hitchin. This has also been put together by Andrew Surry, using material from the Midland Railway Study Centre and the National Railway Museum.
The talk will take place at 8pm on 18th September at Hitchin Museum and costs £3.50. Bookings must be made in advance by ringing the museum on 01462 434476.
Hitchin Museum is located at Paynes Park, Hitchin, and is open from 10am to 5pm daily (except Wed and Sun).
