Hitchin Fans Can Be Proud of Its Team, Says Barratt

Hitchin Town Chairman Terry Barratt has praised Colin Payne's team and the support it has had in 2009-10.
Speaking after the Canaries' 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Slough in the play-off semi-final, Barratt put aside his disappointment to speak in glowing terms of Payne and his assistant, Carl Williams.
"We have had an excellent season, results-wise, and there have been a lot of positives. After the past few years, to see a winning Hitchin team and to accumulate 100 points, was an achievement. Colin and Charlie have built a good team that we can make even better to ensure we are successful next season."
"We have had consistency on and off the field, gates have held up well, our discipline has improved and we have a young squad that has a lot of potential. We are very pleased with what's been achieved , and although we fell short in the play-off, we can still be very proud of our team."
Barratt says Hitchin's supporters have really come into their own this season. "After relegation last season, I was asked if our support would go down - but I knew that our fans are among the most loyal in the country. If anything, the backing has been even better and we have seen that at away games this year. It's a shame we couldn't reward them with promotion, but we have given them 31 wins in 42 games - who would have thought that would not be enough for us to go up?".
Missing out has made Barratt all the more determined that 2010-11 will end differently. "We have to push the pain aside and move on. Get it out of our system and keep the bandwagon rolling for next season. I have a feeling that this will make our team stronger and they will come out of the traps fighting in August."
