Hitchin Helping Hands provides transport for the elderly and people with disabilities to meet in the community in a caring manner, allowing them to be part of the commmunity and continue to enjoy a level of independence.
Hitchin Helping Hands also run a club day on the 2nd Saturday of every month for members of a local social club, with entertainment and refreshments provided for by volunteers. This is held at Westmill Community Centre.
HHH is currently managed and run by Joan Kirby and Jean Jenkins. There are two paid drivers and several volunteer drivers who are allocated each week. The bookings are taken through Joan Kirby who allocates the drivers and ensures that buses are maintained. Jean Jenkins manages the finance.
HHH are currently looking to recruit volunteer drivers. If you have an odd hour or two to spare to help assist a valuable community service we would love to hear from you.
Future Plans:
Hitchin Helping Hands must now raise funds to replace one of the 11 seater buses, and two others within the next 12 months. Due to age and mileage they are now no longer economically viable. To accomplish this we need to raise awareness of our fund raising through the local media and appeal to local people, businesses and bodies that can sponsor small amounts, or have funding available for vehicle purchase in this area.
Our funds have been raised through Flag days, Picnic in the Park, and donations. This and the small margin of profit do not meet the funds required for vehicle replacement.
HHH now intends to run an awareness program with the local media, looking at raising funds through sponsorship, donation or direct grants from bodies that have funds available for this type of charity.
