Friends of Purwell & Burymead
| Published: 9th April 2008 16:57 |
This is a new group for people who enjoy using open spaces along the River Purwell in Hitchin and would like to have a say in improving them. From Purwell Ninesprings via Purwell Meadows and Walsworth Common to Burymead Springs, the river links a string of playing fields and nature reserves. Along the way, you can take pleasant walks, stop for a summer picnic, watch wildlife and help with volunteer conservation tasks. There is also plenty of scope for children to play and let off steam.
The group will work closely with North Hertfordshire District Council, Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust and other organisations to encourage enjoyment of the sites, to be a first point of contact for consultation and decision making and to be the 'eyes and ears on the ground' who check what's going on. The Friends might also wish to organise walks, educational and social events, training and publicity or apply for funding for equipment or facilities. The group is currently hosted by the Countryside Management Service but will become independent when members want it.
