A letter from the Rotary Club of Hitchin Tilehouse...
Dear All
Back to the Source Walk 15th - 26th September 2008
In the Spring of 2004 three noble Hitchin chaps (Keith Hoskins, Tony Norgan and Steve Dyer) walked the Thames Path from the source of the River to the Thames Barrier in aid of The Prostate Cancer Charity and Hitchin Town Centre Initiative and raised over £23,000 for two worthy causes.
Well guess what we're doing it all over again, but back the other way. By this September four intrepid walkers, Alan Doggett, Stephen Dyer, Tony Norgan and Charles Smith will be honed to perfection and ready for the challenge of walking the Thames Path from the Thames Barrier back to the source of the River - a muddy puddle in Gloucestershire, a distance of approximately 226 miles in 10 days.
They, along with the members of The Rotary Club of Hitchin Tilehouse, are aiming to raise the £40,000 needed to purchase a minibus for Hitchin Helping Hands. This small but fabulous Hitchin based charity provides the elderly and disadvantaged within our community a lifeline in the form of transportation to hospitals, social activities and shopping. Their willing team of volunteers undertake over 600 journeys per month in four mini buses. Many of the clients that Hitchin Helping Hands support would remain housebound without them - they really do make a difference to many individuals quality of life.
As ever, their fleet of buses require constant upgrading, maintenance and eventual replacement. Between us we can raise the £40,000 to provide the charity and therefore those in our community with a mini bus, purpose built and equipped for their requirements.
Please consider sponsoring the walkers and play your part in helping us raise the £40,000 required. You would be helping support a wonderful charity and encouraging the intrepid four to keep putting one foot in front of the other!
You can help us by:
- Walking the route with us and raising at least £50 per day walked
- Obtaining sponsorship from friends and family (it's 20 miles per day)
- Sponsor one of the many bridges or locks along the route
- Make a donation online at www.justgiving.com/hitchintilehouserotary/donateor
- Sponsor one of our walkers
For further information please visit the Rotary Club of Hitchin Tilehouse website.
We hope that you will feel able to offer your support to The Rotary Club of Hitchin Tilehouse and of course Hitchin Helping Hands.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs Sue Kirby
