Take advantage of new technology to make sure you can vote in future elections...
North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC) is compiling its annual electoral register and for the first time you will be able to confirm your details by texting from your mobile phone. You can also confirm them via the internet or on a freephone number.
NHDC will be sending you a from asking you to confirm or change your details. If you need to change them you must return the form but you can use the other methods to confirm that there are no changes.
The replies will be used to compile the electoral register which runs from December 1 until November 30, 2008 and only people who are on the register can vote in that year.
The Council is legally obliged to send reminder forms to everyone who fails to reply to the first letter by the middle of September and, if there is still no response, a canvasser calls at the home. This raises the cost and leaves less money available for other Council services.
Cllr Claire Strong (right), NHDC Portfolio Holder for Policy, said: "The right to vote is something our ancestors fought hard to achieve and voting is an important way to make your voice heard.
Please return the form as quickly as possible or use of the new methods to confirm the details are correct. We are trying very hard to make this process as easy and convenient as we can and reduce the costs to a minimum."
