Actress Martha Ross, who played a market trader in EastEnders for 21 years, cut the ribbon on the new ground-level Market Office at 20 Churchgate on Saturday (November 22).
Traders and shoppers were invited to go along and meet the new team behind the market and sample nibbles provided by the traders while hearing about future plans. Management of the market was handed over to Hitchin Markets Ltd, part of Hitchin Town Centre Initiative, by owners North Hertfordshire District Council in August.
Tony Howes, Market Manager, said:
"Work is ongoing in terms of raising standards of cleanliness, health and safety and the ambience of the market in general, and by the end of this month there will be improved lighting to all the stalls.
"Then early next year 26 stalls around the market will be provided with shutters to box them in and improve security, encourage new traders and enable improved displays, plus a section of stalls will be removed to improve its general appearance as customers approach the market."
Martha, who has appeared in a variety of programmes including Grange Hill, lives in Hitchin and is the mother of an entertainment dynasty including well-known television presenter Jonathan Ross.
